Born in 1912 in Richmond, Virginia Dorothy was a member of the National Council of Negro Women
She was well educated and had earned her masters degree from New York University in 1933
She has been called "The Hat Lady" as she always had very large, unique hats to wear for her public appearances.
Her life was devoted to fighting for equal rights for both African Americans and women.
She provided council to countless American leaders including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt
She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994
Height was also awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004
You could always count on her to show up to the National Black Family Reunion every year in Washington, D.C.
She was an honored guest and seated among the dignitaries at the inauguration of President Barack Obama
Dorothy Height died April 20th at Howard University Hospital
